Chief of the Thoracic Oncology at Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori Cancer Institute
Dr Marina Chiara Garassino is the Chief of the Thoracic Oncology Unit at the prestigious Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori Cancer Institute in Milan, Italy. Dr Garassino leads the strategy for clinical and translational research in advanced and locally advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC), Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC), mesothelioma and thymic malignancies.
As a medical oncologist, Dr Garassino has researched precision medicine and immuno-oncology. Dr Garassino main research interests include; the development of new drugs, therapeutically strategies and biomarkers. Dr Garassino has contributed to over 120 peer-reviewed publications, including credits as first or last author in the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet Oncology, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Annals of Oncology and has delivered many presentations at international conferences including AACR, ASCO, ECCO, ESMO, WCLC.
Dr Garassino education includes a Medical Oncology degree and further specialisation in medical oncology (70/70 cum laude) at Università degli Studi in Milan. Dr Garassino achieved a Master’s Degree in Oncology Management at University of Economics “Luigi Bocconi” and completed Dr Garassino training with an ESMO Clinical fellowship in 2009 at Christie’s Hospital in Manchester (UK). Dr Garassino was a member of the EMA SAG (Scientific Advisory Group).
Dr Garassino was able to attract competitive grants (1 TRANSCAN, 2 AIFA, 2 AIRC IG, 1 BERLUCCHI, 2 BRI) as Principal Investigator for over 10 million euros and Dr Garassino was co-investigator in many others (AIRC, CARIPLO, AIFA).
Dr Garassino is serving as ESMO Council member as the Chair of the National Societies Committee. Dr Garassino was the ESMO National Representative for Italy for 5 years (2011-2017) and Dr Garassino is serving on several ESMO Committees (Public Policy extended Committee, Press Committee, Women for Oncology Committee, Lung Cancer faculty, Membership Committee). Dr Garassino used to be an active member of the Young Oncologist Committee. Dr Garassino is serving on both ESMO, WCLC and ASCO annual congress Lung Cancer Track (2019).
